Morrison has elected to retire to pursue an assistant coaching opportunity with his alma mater Gonzaga, CBS Sports reports. Morrison made a spirited run at a roster spot with the Trail Blazers during last season's training camp but ultimately came up short in what was perhaps his last chance at reaching the NBA. The former No. 3 overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft retires with career averages of 7.5 points and 2.1 rebounds over parts of three NBA seasons with the Bobcats and Lakers.

Morrison will be waived by the Trail Blazers, The Oregonian reports. Morrison hasn't found any sustained success at the NBA level, and it appears that his skill level is that of a borderline NBA player. He could catch on somewhere else for depth, but there's no real upside remaining for his career. Any hopes of a revival are long gone, and he'll probably always be remembered as a great college player and major draft bust.
